What Form 1040 is and who uses it

irs.gov says Form 1040 is used by U.S. taxpayers to file an annual income tax return. The 1040 instructions say everyone can file Form 1040, and that Form 1040-SR is an optional alternative for taxpayers born before January 2, 1961 (for 2025) that uses the same schedules and instructions.

Download the current form

The PDF on irs.gov is titled "2025 Form 1040". The 1040 instructions page for that year (1040 (2025)) is on irs.gov too. When the IRS publishes the next year's form, it replaces this one on the same page. RepeatForm does not supply the blank form: get it from irs.gov, or use the one your tax software or preparer gave you.

1040 or 1040-SR, and the schedules

The IRS "About Form 1040" page says you may only need Form 1040 and none of the numbered schedules. It lists when each schedule applies: Schedule 1 for additional income and adjustments to income; Schedule 1-A for additional deductions; Schedule 2 for additional taxes; Schedule 3 for additional credits and payments. RepeatForm works with the Form 1040 PDF only, not the schedules.

Going through the form

Filing status, name, address and social security numbers come first, then dependents. The Income section asks for amounts such as the total from Form(s) W-2, box 1 on line 1a, with a note to attach Form(s) W-2. Later lines cover adjusted gross income, deductions, tax, credits, payments, and either the amount you overpaid or the amount you owe. The last part has your signature. RepeatForm does not work out any amount or choose a filing status: use the IRS instructions, your tax software or a tax professional.

Starting this year's 1040 from last year's

Many people prepare their return in tax software, which carries things over itself. This page is for the other case: you complete the PDF, and you want this year's blank with the same personal details already in. Upload last year's completed 1040 and a blank one; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF free.

What carries over

  • ✓Name, address and other identifying details, where they match in both copies
  • ✓Filing status and other boxes that match in both copies
  • ✓Dependents' names and details, where the layout matches. Check who you can still claim this year.
  • ✓Dollar amounts from last year can carry too, but they belong to last year. Replace or clear every one

What never carries over

  • ✓Your signature and the signing date. They stay blank for you to sign and date. The instructions say a return is not valid unless you sign it as they require.
  • ✓Anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓The tax year and your income, deductions, credits and payments for the new year.

If the IRS form has a new edition

The IRS rewrites parts of the 1040 each year; for 2025 the instructions list new deductions, a new Schedule 1-A and other changes. When your completed copy is an earlier year, many personal answers carry but some fields match only partly. Check every field after a new edition, and most of all any line or box whose wording changed.

The Form W-2 your employer gives you is what you attach: see the W-2 page.

If you were paid as a contractor, the payer may send you a 1099-NEC.

People 65 or older may use 1040-SR instead.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax advice, does not calculate your return, and does not e-file or send anything to the IRS. It cannot tell you which form, status, deduction or schedule applies to you.
  • ✓RepeatForm works with the Form 1040 PDF only, not the schedules or other forms.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.
