Form 8880

Form 8880, Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions

By RepeatForm team

Form 8880 is the Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions. The form says to attach it to Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR. RepeatForm reuses your name and social security number each year; contributions and credit amounts never carry. Upload last year's form and a blank, then review.

Is this page for you?

Plainly: this is a lower-fit page. Form 8880 is a yearly attachment; the identity block repeats, but contributions and the credit are new each year.

What Form 8880 is for

The form is titled "Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions" and says "Attach to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR." Its lines ask about IRA and ABLE contributions, elective deferrals to a 401(k) or other qualified employer plan, and certain distributions. RepeatForm does not work out the credit.

Who cannot take the credit

The form carries a caution that begins "You cannot take this credit if either of the following applies." One condition is an income limit tied to the amount on line 11a of Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, with a different figure by filing status. The other concerns the person who made the contribution: born after a date printed on the form, claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, or a student ("see instructions"). The figures change each year, so this page does not repeat them: read the caution on the form for your year. RepeatForm does not apply it for you.

One column for you, one for your spouse

The form has a column for you and a column for your spouse. On line 4 it says "If married filing jointly, include both spouses' amounts in both columns." Read the instructions for how that works; RepeatForm does not.

Using the same details next year

Upload the Form 8880 you completed last year and this year's blank; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF before you export. Your name and social security number are the part you save retyping.

What carries over

  • ✓Your name and social security number, where they match in both copies
  • ✓Anything else that matches in both copies. Check it yourself; your contributions and income change every year

What never carries over

  • ✓The year and everything that depends on it: contributions, distributions, income lines and the credit rate from the table. Enter those again from this year's records and the IRS instructions.
  • ✓Anything the IRS prints and locks on the form, and anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓A signature or date. The PDF has no field for either; the form is attached to your return.

If the IRS has a new edition

The IRS publishes a Form 8880 for each tax year, and the figures in the caution change by year. Carrying a prior year's copy into the new one works for many answers, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every line on the new year's form in Review before you export.

Additional taxes on IRAs and similar accounts are reported on Form 5329.

The credit is attached to Form 1040.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise the IRS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax or legal advice. It cannot tell you whether you can take the credit, whether a contribution qualifies, or what your credit is, and it does not work out any amount. Use the IRS instructions or a qualified adviser.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not file anything for you or attach the form to your return.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.

The form is the "Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions" and says "Attach to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR." Whether you can take the credit depends on the caution and instructions; RepeatForm cannot tell you. It helps you reuse the details once you decide to complete it.

What is Form 8880 used for?+

The form is the "Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions" and is attached to Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR. Who cannot take the credit on Form 8880?+

The figures change each year, so read the caution on the form for your year. RepeatForm does not apply it for you.

Can I reuse a Form 8880 I filled out before?+

You can reuse your name and social security number where they match. The contributions, distributions and income lines are for one year, so enter them again and check every line in Review.
