What Form 1040-SR is

irs.gov says Form 1040 is used by U.S. taxpayers to file an annual income tax return, and that Form 1040-SR is available as an optional alternative for taxpayers age 65 or older. Form 1040-SR uses the same schedules and instructions as Form 1040. Most people prepare their return in tax software; this page is for working in the PDF.

Who can use it

On the 2025 form, the age line reads "Were born before January 2, 1961." It is optional: the IRS says Form 1040-SR is an alternative to Form 1040. The Standard Deduction Chart is printed on the last page of the form.

Reusing last year's details

Upload last year's Form 1040-SR (or the 1040 you used) and this year's blank 1040-SR. RepeatForm carries across the answers that match in both copies, such as names, address and other details that stay the same, you review them, then you preview the PDF before you export.

What carries over

  • ✓Names, addresses, social security numbers and other personal details, where they match in both copies
  • ✓Filing status and other boxes that match in both copies. Check them for this year
  • ✓Dollar amounts can carry too, but they belong to last year. Replace or clear every one

What never carries over

  • ✓Income, deductions, credits, payments and every dollar amount. They belong to last year. Replace or recheck each one.
  • ✓Filing status, dependents and the age and blindness boxes. Recheck them for this year.
  • ✓Anything you attach, such as W-2s, schedules and other forms.
  • ✓A signature or date. The PDF has no signature or date field RepeatForm can fill. Sign by hand as the IRS instructs.
  • ✓A decision. RepeatForm does not tell you whether to use 1040-SR or 1040, or what you owe.

Signature and date

The 1040-SR PDF has no signature or date field RepeatForm can fill. They stay blank for you to complete by hand.

If the IRS form has a new edition

The IRS renames fields between editions, so carry-over is partial. Check every field after a new edition.

The standard return is the 1040; 1040-SR is an optional alternative for people 65 or older.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax advice, does not file anything with the IRS, and cannot tell you which form to use or what you owe.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully.
