What Form I-864 is and what signing it means

uscis.gov says most family-based immigrants and some employment-based immigrants use this form to show they have adequate means of financial support and are not likely to rely on the U.S. government for financial support. USCIS also says Form I-864 is a legally binding contract with the U.S. government to financially support the sponsored immigrant, and that sponsors should not take on this obligation if they are not prepared to follow through. RepeatForm cannot tell you whether you should sign one or what it commits you to. Read the USCIS page and the instructions, and ask a qualified adviser if you have questions.

Which edition USCIS accepts

USCIS published a new edition (08/24/26) on Aug. 31, 2026. It says that beginning Oct. 1, 2026 it only accepts the 08/24/26 edition and will not process a 10/17/24 edition postmarked or submitted electronically on or after that date. USCIS also says the new edition includes a privacy release that authorizes it to request information from one or more consumer reporting agencies, and that a credit or security freeze on a sponsor's file may delay things. If you hold an older completed copy, start from the current blank. RepeatForm does not supply the blank form: get it from uscis.gov.

Where the income figures come from

USCIS publishes Form I-864P, the HHS Poverty Guidelines for Affidavit of Support, and says to use it to complete Form I-864. The table is by household size and region, with a 100% column for sponsors on active duty in the U.S. armed forces who are petitioning for a spouse or child, and a 125% column for all other sponsors. USCIS says the current guidelines are effective beginning Mar. 1, 2026. This page does not state any dollar figure because the table changes. USCIS also offers an optional Sponsor Eligibility Tool, and says the tool does not guarantee a positive or negative decision.

Going through the form

The sponsor's details come first: name, address, Social Security Number, and the information about the immigrant being sponsored, followed by the household and income sections and the sponsor's signature. USCIS lists the sponsor's family name, address, Social Security Number and signature as required fields for a lockbox to accept the form. USCIS's evidence checklist for all sponsors includes a copy of your individual federal income tax return for the most recent tax year, or a statement describing why you were not required to file. Some sponsors also need Form I-864A for each household member whose income is used. RepeatForm does not decide what to attach: read the I-864 instructions and the USCIS checklist. Fees are on the USCIS Fee Schedule page, or the Department of State pages if you file with the Department of State.

Using the same details on a new copy

Upload the I-864 you completed and a blank one; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF free.

What carries over

  • ✓Sponsor name, address, date of birth and other personal details that match in both copies
  • ✓Household and income answers that match in both copies. Check every one, because income, household and the immigrant being sponsored change
  • ✓Details for the immigrant you sponsored last time can carry too. Replace them if this copy is for someone else

What never carries over

  • ✓Your signature. The signature boxes stay blank for you to sign. The signing date can carry from your completed copy, so check it and replace it. USCIS says it rejects any unsigned form.
  • ✓Anything USCIS prints and locks on the form, including the barcode. If the barcode would be out of date for the new details, you see a notice: "The barcode on this form won't update. USCIS may ask for a newly printed copy."
  • ✓Anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓Tax returns, proof of income and the other evidence. Those are separate from the form and are yours to prepare.

If USCIS has a new edition

USCIS updates the form from time to time, and the edition changed in August 2026. Carrying an older copy into the current edition works for many answers, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every field after a new edition, especially the sections that changed.

A family-based petition starts with Form I-130, filed for each eligible relative.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise USCIS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm is not a law firm and does not give immigration, financial or legal advice. It cannot tell you whether you can or should be a sponsor, whether your income is enough, or what you owe. Use the USCIS page and the form instructions.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not send your affidavit to USCIS or the Department of State.
  • ✓The form includes a barcode that RepeatForm cannot update.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from uscis.gov.

FAQ

FAQ

What is an I-864 form for?+

According to USCIS, most family-based immigrants and some employment-based immigrants use it to show they have adequate means of financial support. USCIS calls it a legally binding contract with the U.S. government to support the sponsored immigrant.

How much income is required for an affidavit of support?+

USCIS says to use the Form I-864P HHS Poverty Guidelines. The table depends on household size and region, and uses 125% of the guidelines for most sponsors and 100% for sponsors on active duty in the U.S. armed forces who are petitioning for a spouse or child. See the I-864P page for current figures. RepeatForm cannot tell you whether you meet them.

What documents do I need for the I-864?+

USCIS publishes an optional checklist. For all sponsors it includes a copy of your individual federal income tax return for the most recent tax year, or a statement of why you were not required to file. Other items depend on your situation, such as Form I-864A for household members. Use the USCIS checklist and instructions.

Is Form I-864 still required?+

USCIS says it is used by most family-based immigrants and some employment-based immigrants. Whether it applies to a given case is for USCIS or a qualified adviser, not RepeatForm. USCIS also says beginning Oct. 1, 2026 it only accepts the 08/24/26 edition.

How much is the fee for Form I-864?+

If you file with USCIS, see the USCIS Fee Schedule page. If you file with the Department of State, see the Department of State's fee pages. Fees change, so this page does not state one.

What if I forget to sign?+

USCIS says it will reject any unsigned form. RepeatForm leaves the signature boxes blank for you to sign. The signing date can carry from your completed copy, so check it and replace it.

Can I use my old copy?+

Use the old copy for the details you want to carry. For filing, USCIS says it only accepts the 08/24/26 edition beginning Oct. 1, 2026, so start from the current blank.
