By RepeatForm team

Form 8962 is the IRS form used to figure the premium tax credit and reconcile any advance payments of it. You attach it to your return. If you re-enter the same household details every year, upload last year's completed copy and the new blank. You review every answer, then preview the PDF.

What Form 8962 is for

irs.gov describes Form 8962 as the form to figure the amount of your Premium Tax Credit (PTC) and to reconcile it with any advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit (APTC). RepeatForm does not work out either amount. It only helps you carry answers from a copy you already completed into a new blank.

What you need before you start

The Form 8962 instructions say you need Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, to complete the form. The Marketplace sends it to people who enrolled in coverage through it. It reports the information the Marketplace gives the IRS about the coverage, so get the new year's 1095-A first; last year's does not apply.

Where the form goes

The 2025 PDF says to attach Form 8962 to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR. It is not filed on its own. Most people complete it inside tax software; this page is for the case where you are working in the PDF.

Reusing your details next year

Upload the Form 8962 you completed last time and this year's blank. RepeatForm carries across the answers that match in both copies, you review them, then you preview the PDF before you export.

What carries over

  • ✓Your name, social security number and other household details, where they match in both copies
  • ✓Boxes and checkboxes that match in both copies. Check each one against this year's situation
  • ✓Dollar amounts and counts can carry too, but they belong to last year. Replace or clear every one

What never carries over

  • ✓Anything from last year's Form 1095-A. The coverage, premiums and advance payments belong to that year.
  • ✓Your income, the amounts the form works out and anything that depends on the year. Replace or recheck every number.
  • ✓Anything the IRS prints for its own use or that does not appear in both copies.
  • ✓A signature or date. The PDF has no field for either; sign your return as the IRS instructs.
  • ✓A decision. RepeatForm does not tell you whether you qualify, how much credit you get or whether you must repay anything.

Signature and date

The Form 8962 PDF has no signature or date field, so there is nothing to carry. Your signature goes on the return it is attached to.

If the IRS form has a new edition

The IRS updates the form each year and sometimes renames fields. Carrying a prior copy into a new blank works for many answers but only partly for renamed ones, so check every field after a new edition.

Form 8962 is attached to your 1040 return.

If you are 65 or older you may use 1040-SR instead of the 1040.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax or legal advice, does not calculate the credit, and does not file anything with the IRS.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.
