Form W-7

Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

By RepeatForm team

Form W-7 is how you apply for an IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), or renew one. If you fill in W-7s for several family members or clients and keep retyping the same details, upload a completed copy and a blank one. You review each answer, then preview the PDF.

What Form W-7 is

irs.gov says to use Form W-7 to apply for an IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), and that you can also use it to renew an ITIN that is expiring or has already expired. An ITIN is a 9-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals who are required for U.S. federal tax purposes to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not have and are not eligible to get a Social Security number. RepeatForm does not tell you whether you qualify.

What goes with the form

The W-7 instructions describe the supporting documents and, for most applications, a federal tax return the form is attached to. They also say that if you have an SSN application pending, you do not file Form W-7. The reason you check on the form determines what must go with it. Read the instructions for the box you check; this page does not choose it for you.

Processing and where to apply

The instructions say you can apply by mail, through an IRS-authorized acceptance agent, or in person at designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers. They say to allow 7 weeks for the IRS to tell you the status (9 to 11 weeks during peak periods, January 15 through April 30, or from overseas).

Reusing details for the next application

An acceptance agent or preparer often fills in the same agent details and, for a family, the same household address for each W-7. Upload a W-7 you completed and a blank one. RepeatForm carries across the answers that match in both copies, you review them, then you preview the PDF before you export. An ITIN renewal for the same person next time works the same way.

What carries over

  • ✓Agent or preparer details, and a household address, where they match in both copies
  • ✓Other boxes that match in both copies. Check the application type and the reason yourself
  • ✓The applicant's own details can carry too, but they belong to the previous applicant. Replace every one

What never carries over

  • ✓The applicant. Name, birth details, identifying documents and ITIN history belong to one person. Replace them for each new applicant.
  • ✓The reason for applying. Recheck the application type and reason boxes for each application.
  • ✓Documents and attachments. RepeatForm fills the PDF only.
  • ✓A signature or date. These are printed lines on the form, not fields. Sign and date by hand.
  • ✓A decision. RepeatForm does not give immigration or tax advice.

Signature and date

The signature and date on Form W-7 are lines, not fields RepeatForm can fill. They stay blank for you to complete by hand.

If the IRS form has a new edition

The IRS renames fields between editions, so carry-over is partial. Check every field after a new edition.

An ITIN application is usually submitted with a federal tax return, such as the 1040.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax, immigration or legal advice, does not submit anything to the IRS, and cannot tell you whether you can get an ITIN.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully.
