What Form I-765 is

uscis.gov says certain aliens who are in the United States may file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to request an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Other aliens whose immigration status authorizes them to work without restrictions may also use Form I-765 to apply for an EAD that shows such authorization. Whether you can file, and under which category, is decided by USCIS rules, not by this page: read the Form I-765 instructions and the USCIS page.

Download the current form and check the edition

The USCIS page says to make sure every form you send is the current acceptable edition, shown under Edition Date on the form's webpage and at the bottom of each page of the form and instructions. All pages must be from the same edition; if any pages are from a different edition, USCIS may reject the form. The PDF on uscis.gov is marked Edition 08/21/25. RepeatForm does not supply the blank form: get it from uscis.gov.

File online or on paper

USCIS says that if you have not started the EAD process, you can begin by creating a USCIS account online and filing Form I-765 online, and that a paper application is an option if necessary. If you file online, there is no PDF to fill in. This page is for the paper form.

When to file a renewal

USCIS says it generally recommends filing to renew an EAD up to 180 days before the current one expires, and that it generally does not backdate or postdate a renewal EAD. Some categories have their own timing: see the table on the USCIS page and the instructions. Fees are on the USCIS Fee Schedule (Form G-1055) page.

Going through the form

The form begins with the reason for applying: initial permission to accept employment, replacement of a lost, stolen or damaged EAD (or a correction not due to USCIS error), or renewal. For a renewal the form says to attach a copy of your previous EAD. It then asks for your full legal name, other names used, addresses and other information. In Part 2, Item Number 27, you type or print your eligibility category; the instructions say to enter only one category number. RepeatForm does not decide your category or whether you are eligible. Part 6 is for additional information if you ran out of room.

Using the same details on a renewal or another copy

Upload the I-765 you completed and a blank one for the new edition; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF free.

What carries over

  • ✓Your name, other names used, mailing and physical address, and other personal details that match in both copies
  • ✓Other answers that match in both copies, such as contact details. Check that each is still true today
  • ✓The reason for filing and the eligibility category can carry too, but a renewal or a new category is a different filing. Check both yourself

What never carries over

  • ✓Your signature. The signature boxes stay blank for you to sign. The signing date can carry from your completed copy, so check it and replace it. The form has signature sections for the applicant and for any interpreter or preparer, and each person signs for themselves.
  • ✓Anything USCIS prints and locks on the form, including the barcode. If the barcode would be out of date for the new details, you see a notice: "The barcode on this form won't update. USCIS may ask for a newly printed copy."
  • ✓Anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓The evidence and the fee. Those are separate from the form and are yours to prepare. See the instructions.

Current uscis.gov edition

The Form I-765 PDF on uscis.gov is marked Edition 08/21/25, the same as the Edition Date on the uscis.gov form page. Get the current form from uscis.gov

If USCIS has a new edition

USCIS updates the I-765 from time to time. Carrying an older copy into the current edition works for many answers, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every field after a new edition, and make sure every page you send is from the same edition.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise USCIS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm is not a law firm and does not give immigration or legal advice. It cannot tell you if you are eligible, which category applies, or what fee you owe. For those, use the USCIS page and the form instructions.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not send your application to USCIS.
  • ✓The form includes a barcode that RepeatForm cannot update. If your details change, you may need to print a fresh copy from USCIS.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from uscis.gov.
