Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Returns

By RepeatForm team

Form 7004 is the IRS form to request an automatic extension of time to file certain business income tax, information and other returns. The IRS says the extension is generally 6 months and does not extend the time to pay. To reuse your entity's details, upload a 7004 you completed and a blank, then review.

What Form 7004 is for

irs.gov says to use Form 7004 to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file certain business income tax, information and other returns. The instructions say the extension is granted if you complete the form properly, make a proper estimate of the tax (if applicable), file it by the due date of the return, and pay any tax that is due. Line 1 asks for the form code of the return the application is for; the form lists the codes. RepeatForm cannot tell you whether you need an extension or which code applies.

It extends time to file, not time to pay

The instructions are plain: "Form 7004 does not extend the time to pay tax." Any balance due on line 8 is generally required by the due date of the return, and interest is charged on tax not paid by the regular due date even when an extension is granted. See the IRS instructions for the penalty rules. Any amount on the form is yours to estimate.

One form for each return

The form says to file a separate application for each return, and the instructions say there are no blanket requests: the extension applies only to the return named on line 1. For consolidated groups, the instructions explain line 3. For someone handling several entities, each gets its own Form 7004.

E-filing and paper filing

The instructions say Form 7004 "can be filed electronically for most returns" and give IRS.gov/Efile7004 for details. A short list of returns can't be filed electronically (8612, 8613, 8725, 8831, 8876, 706-GS(D)); on paper you mail it to the address for your return. The instructions also warn that if you file Form 7004 on paper and file your return electronically, the return may be processed before the extension is granted, which may result in a penalty notice. RepeatForm does not file anything: it prepares the PDF.

Using the same details on a new copy

Upload a 7004 you completed and a blank one; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF before you export. Handy when the same entity extends again next year, or when you prepare one 7004 per entity for several clients.

What carries over

  • ✓The entity's name, identifying number and address, where they match in both copies
  • ✓The form code for the return, where it matches in both copies. Check it: the code depends on which return you are extending
  • ✓Anything else that matches in both copies. Check it yourself; the tax year, the estimate and payments are different every year

What never carries over

  • ✓The tax year or tax-year dates on line 5a, and anything that depends on them. Enter them again yourself.
  • ✓The short-tax-year reasons and the check boxes for special situations: they describe one return only.
  • ✓The tentative total tax, total payments and credits, and balance due (lines 6 to 8). Estimate them again for the new return.
  • ✓The form code if you are extending a different return. Check line 1 every time.
  • ✓Anything the IRS prints and locks on the form, and anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓A payment. A completed form is not a payment: pay through the IRS.

Signature and date

The Form 7004 instructions say "No signature is required on this form." The PDF has no signature or date field, so there is nothing to sign or carry. The tax-year dates on line 5a are part of the request and are yours to enter.

If the IRS has a new edition

The IRS revises Form 7004 from time to time. Carrying a prior copy into a new blank works for many answers, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every line on the new form in Review before you export.

If you are an individual rather than a business, the extension form is Form 4868.

A new entity gets its identifying number from Form SS-4.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise the IRS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax or legal advice. It cannot tell you whether you need an extension, which form code applies, what to estimate or what you owe. Use the IRS instructions or a qualified adviser.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not send the form or any payment to the IRS.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.
