Form 1065

Form 1065, U.S. Return of Partnership Income

By RepeatForm team

Form 1065 is the information return a partnership files to report its income, gains, losses, deductions and credits. The partnership does not pay tax on its income; it passes it to its partners. RepeatForm helps you reuse the partnership's details: upload a Form 1065 you completed and the current blank, then review every line.

Is this page for you?

Plainly: this is one of the better fits. A partnership files every tax year, and its name, address, EIN and business description rarely change. Those details can carry across. The income, deductions, partner counts and every schedule figure do change, so they never carry as truth. If you prepare returns for several partnerships, start each one from that partnership's own last copy.

What Form 1065 is for

The instructions say "Form 1065 is an information return used to report the income, gains, losses, deductions, credits, and other information from the operation of a partnership." They add "Generally, a partnership doesn't pay tax on its income but passes through any profits or losses to its partners." Read the full instructions on irs.gov; RepeatForm does not explain how to treat any item.

Who files it

The instructions say "every domestic partnership must file Form 1065, unless it neither receives income nor incurs any expenditures treated as deductions or credits for federal income tax purposes." They also say "Entities formed as LLCs that are classified as partnerships for federal income tax purposes have the same filing requirements as domestic partnerships." RepeatForm does not decide whether your entity must file.

When it is due, and extensions

The instructions say "Generally, a domestic partnership must file Form 1065 by the 15th day of the 3rd month following the date its tax year ended as shown at the top of Form 1065." and "For calendar-year partnerships, the due date is March 15." For an extension they say to file Form 7004 and "File Form 7004 by the regular due date of the partnership return." Check irs.gov for the date that applies to you.

Filing electronically

The instructions say "Beginning in 2024, partnerships were required to file Form 1065 and related forms and schedules electronically if they file 10 or more returns of any type during the tax year" and "Partnerships with more than 100 partners are required to file Form 1065, Schedules K-1, and other related forms and schedules electronically." RepeatForm fills the PDF form; follow the IRS instructions, or your software or preparer, for how your return is submitted.

Schedules K-1 and the partnership representative

Item I on the form reads "Number of Schedules K-1. Attach one for each person who was a partner at any time during the tax year:". Schedule B asks for the partnership representative, with the heading "Designation of Partnership Representative." Both change with the partners and the year, so check them yourself. Partners' K-1s have their own page, linked below.

Using the same partnership details next year

Upload a Form 1065 you completed and the current blank; RepeatForm carries the matching details across; you go through a review step, then preview the PDF before you export. Use last year's copy as the source, then change what differs. This helps most if you prepare returns for several partnerships.

What carries over

  • ✓The partnership's name, address and employer identification number, where they match in both copies
  • ✓The principal business activity, product or service, business code and date the business started, where they match in both copies
  • ✓The accounting method boxes and other answers that match in both copies. Check them yourself; anything can change from year to year

What never carries over

  • ✓Amounts. Income, deductions and the figures in Schedules K, L, M-1 and M-2 change every year and RepeatForm does not add up any amount. Enter and check each yourself.
  • ✓The year-specific boxes and questions: the tax year dates, initial, final or amended return, the number of Schedules K-1, and the answers in Schedule B. They describe one year, so answer them for this one.
  • ✓Lines the IRS locks or calculates on the official form. They stay blank for you to complete after the review step.
  • ✓Anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓Signing and filing. The form says "Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have examined this return"; sign by hand where the form asks. The instructions say "Form 1065 isn't considered to be a return unless it's signed by a partner or LLC member."

If the IRS has a new edition

The IRS publishes a new Form 1065 for each tax year. Carrying an earlier copy into the new one works for many answers, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every line on the new form in Review before you export.

The PDF checked for this page is the 2025 Form 1065. The About Form 1065 page on irs.gov links the current form and its instructions. RepeatForm does not supply the blank form: get it from irs.gov.

Each partner receives a Schedule K-1. The partner share form has its own page: Schedule K-1 (Form 1065).

To ask for more time to file, see Form 7004.

A partnership with rental real estate also completes Form 8825.

S corporations file a different return: Form 1120-S.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise the IRS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax or legal advice. It cannot tell you whether a partnership must file, how to treat an item, or what any amount should be, and it does not add up any figure. The IRS instructions explain those rules.
  • ✓RepeatForm shows a review step before it makes the PDF. The official form locks some boxes, such as lines the IRS calculates, so some IRS-calculated lines stay blank for you to complete.
  • ✓The refund line asks for a bank routing number and account number. Those are ordinary entry boxes: check them, and clear any you do not want on the new copy.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not file anything for you or prepare the Schedules K-1.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.

FAQ

FAQ

How do I file Form 1065?+

The instructions cover who files, when, and how: on electronic filing they say partnerships "with more than 100 partners are required to file Form 1065, Schedules K-1, and other related forms and schedules electronically." Smaller partnerships should read the full instructions and your software or preparer's guidance. RepeatForm fills the PDF; it does not file anything for you.

Do LLCs have to file Form 1065?+

irs.gov says "Entities formed as LLCs that are classified as partnerships for federal income tax purposes have the same filing requirements as domestic partnerships." Whether your LLC is classified that way is a tax question for the IRS instructions or a preparer; RepeatForm does not decide it.

When is Form 1065 due?+

The instructions say "Generally, a domestic partnership must file Form 1065 by the 15th day of the 3rd month following the date its tax year ended as shown at the top of Form 1065." and "For calendar-year partnerships, the due date is March 15." Check irs.gov for the date that applies to you, including any weekend or holiday rule.

Can I reuse last year's Form 1065?+

You can reuse the details that stay the same, such as the partnership's name, address, EIN and business description. The amounts, partner counts and year-specific answers change, so enter them again and check every line on the new form in Review.
