Form Schedule 8812

Schedule 8812 (Form 1040), Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents

By RepeatForm team

Schedule 8812 figures your child tax credit, credit for other dependents and additional child tax credit. You attach it to your tax return. Lower fit: only your name and social security number repeat, and every count and amount is new each year. RepeatForm still carries those across: upload an earlier Schedule 8812 and the current blank, then review.

Is this page for you?

Plainly: this is a lower-fit form for reuse. Schedule 8812 has one name line and one social security number. The rest is a worksheet of counts, Yes/No answers and amounts that you work out again each tax year, and RepeatForm never does that for you. So the benefit is small: your name and number carried across, and a Review step that shows you everything else that needs to be entered by hand. If you only want the name line done, that may be all you need.

What Schedule 8812 is for

irs.gov says "Use Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) to figure your child tax credit (CTC), credit for other dependents (ODC), and additional child tax credit (ACTC)." The form says "Attach to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR." RepeatForm does not decide which credits you can take.

Where the dependents go

The schedule does not list your children or dependents. The instructions point to the Dependents section of your return, "row (7) of the Dependents section on page 1 of Form 1040 or 1040-SR (row (6) on Form 1040-NR)," where you mark each child or dependent for the credit you are claiming. The schedule then asks for the numbers: line 4 is "Number of qualifying children under age 17 with the required social security number." RepeatForm gives no advice on who qualifies.

The parts of the schedule

Part I is "Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents." Part II-A is "Additional Child Tax Credit for All Filers." Part II-B is "Certain Filers Who Have Three or More Qualifying Children and Bona Fide Residents of Puerto Rico." Part II-C is "Additional Child Tax Credit." The form tells you where to stop: line 12 says "No. Stop here. You cannot take the child tax credit, credit for other dependents, or additional child tax credit."

Order of work with your return

The form says "Complete your Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR through line 27a (or Form 1040-NR through line 26) (also complete Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 11) before completing Part II-A." Line 1 asks you to "Enter the amount from line 11a of your Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR," so the schedule depends on your return. Line 2c asks for "the amount from line 15 of your Form 4563."

What the 2025 instructions flag

The "What's New" list in the instructions includes "Social security number (SSN) required to claim the child tax credit (CTC) and additional child tax credit (ACTC)." The About page also lists "Update to the 2025 Instructions for Schedule 8812 (Form 1040)" under Recent developments, dated 10-FEB-2026. Read both on irs.gov.

Using the same details for another year

Upload a Schedule 8812 you completed and the current blank; RepeatForm carries the matching answers across; you review them, then preview the PDF before you export. Use your earlier copy as the source, then change what differs.

What carries over

  • ✓The name(s) shown on your return and your social security number, where they match in both copies. Check they match the return you are filing now
  • ✓Anything else that matches in both copies. Check it yourself; the numbers of children, every Yes/No answer and every amount can differ each year

What the review step does

  • ✓On this form the IRS locks some boxes. RepeatForm skips those and shows you a review notice before you export, so you see what was and was not carried. Some lines stay blank for you to complete, so check every line on the new form in Review.

What never carries over

  • ✓The numbers of children on lines 4 and 6, and the amounts on lines 5 and 7. Your household changes, and RepeatForm does not work out any amount.
  • ✓Every Yes/No answer, such as the answer on line 12 and the answer on line 19. Check each one for this year.
  • ✓Every amount taken from your return, such as line 1, and every calculated line, including the results of Credit Limit Worksheet A and the earned income lines. Enter and check each one yourself.
  • ✓Your dependents. They are entered on Form 1040, not here.
  • ✓Anything the IRS prints and locks on the form, and anything in your completed copy that does not appear in the blank form.
  • ✓Attaching the schedule to your return. A completed schedule does nothing until it goes with your Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR.

If the IRS has a new edition

The IRS publishes a new Schedule 8812 each tax year, and the amounts printed on it change. Carrying an earlier copy into the new one works for the name and number, but some fields are renamed or moved and match only partly, so check every line on the new form in Review before you export.

Download the current form

The PDF checked for this page is "Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) 2025". The About Schedule 8812 page on irs.gov links the current form and its instructions. RepeatForm does not supply the blank form: get it from irs.gov.

Schedule 8812 is attached to a return. The main return has its own page: Form 1040.

If your return is Form 1040-SR, see Form 1040-SR.

Line 2c of the schedule refers to Form 4563, which has its own page: Form 4563.

Good to know

  • ✓You review every carried-over answer. RepeatForm does not guarantee the form is correct and cannot promise the IRS will accept it.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not give tax or legal advice. It cannot tell you which children or dependents qualify, whether you can take any credit, or how large it is, and it does not work out any amount. The IRS instructions explain those rules.
  • ✓RepeatForm does not enter your dependents. Their details go on your Form 1040, not on this schedule. It also does not attach the schedule to your return or file anything for you.
  • ✓RepeatForm shows a review step before it makes the PDF. Boxes the IRS locks are left blank.
  • ✓It works with digital, text-selectable PDFs only. Scans, photos and handwriting are not supported.
  • ✓Same or recent editions work best. If the form changed you may get fewer matches, so check the preview carefully and get the current form from irs.gov.

FAQ

FAQ

What is a 8812 tax form?+

irs.gov says "Use Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) to figure your child tax credit (CTC), credit for other dependents (ODC), and additional child tax credit (ACTC)." RepeatForm helps you reuse your name and number; it does not decide which credits you can take.

What qualifies as earned income?+

Line 18a of the schedule asks for "Earned income (see instructions)." The instructions say "otherwise, all other taxpayers can use the Earned Income Chart, later, to figure the amount to enter on line 18a," and use the Earned Income Worksheet if you have net earnings from self-employment and use either optional method. RepeatForm does not work out earned income; use the chart or worksheet in the instructions.

Where do I claim dependents on Form 1040?+

The instructions point to "row (7) of the Dependents section on page 1 of Form 1040 or 1040-SR (row (6) on Form 1040-NR)," where you mark each child or dependent for the credit you are claiming. The dependents are entered on the return, not on Schedule 8812.

What qualifies you for the additional child tax credit?+

The schedule says "If the amount on line 12 is more than the amount on line 14, you may be able to take the additional child tax credit." The instructions also list "Social security number (SSN) required to claim the child tax credit (CTC) and additional child tax credit (ACTC)" under What's New. RepeatForm gives no tax advice; read Part II of the instructions.
